Hello Matt :

There are two types of search engine optimization : On-page and off-page SEO. Come to think about it, the name says it all.

On-page SEO is made on the particular web site or web-page focusing of targeted keywords, meta-tags and descriptions adhered to all the search engine guidelines like Google , Yahoo and MSN.

Many web designers do not know how to do SEO and never let know there customers that they really need it to get good SERPs ( SEARCH ENGINE RANKING POSITIONS ) , increase their ROIs ( return on investment ) and my favorite - TARGETED TRAFFIC.

More traffic doesn't necessarily mean more business. Targeted traffic is the key.

Off-page SEO deals with external factors like high quality back links from high PR ( Page rank ) similar websites like yours, directories, social networking sites , press release websites and mostly importantly news sites and educational sites.

I hope this helps you all!

Best regards...
 and have a blessed NEW 2009 YEAR!

@Daniel Chege
Thanks for the comment...would you care to explain the difference between on-page and off-page SEO? While I'm sure all of our readers understand that concept, I'm not sure I do!

@Steve
I don't see many benefits to business websites submitting to directories. It's like a needle in a haystack anymore.

As you mention, the key to getting noticed is good content, and quality articles which is why we recommend any business website compliment itself with a blog.

Business websites don't change much, you're content is static, so if you want to have people (and search engines) find you having dynamic content is a must. A blog is that dynamic content.

Thanks for coming by,
Matt
