I don't know if you watch American Idol, but this post actually reminded me of an audition where the lady came in and said she was so confident about her singing and her future career singing that she had quit her job. She sung horribly of course. Then the judges called her workplace of employment and she got her job back. With that little tidbit, Id like to say that many people get overzealous about a new found business and quit their job like that. Then they end up regretting it as the new business does not work out. I have seen it happen all too often… and its important for people to know what they are getting into!

Matt,

I did quit a day job that paid well, had excellent benefits including a company car and profit sharing and a lot of stability. I did it to pursue a passion and while there are times that I miss the certainty of a paycheck every two weeks, there are also times I wake up and it's 20 degrees below zero with blowing snow and I know I don't even have to leave the house.

I didn't just wake up one day and decide to quit. For months, I did my 8 - 5 gig, then came home and worked until midnight or so and then from 5am until I left for my "real" job. It was tough. But it gave me a sense of what I would need to do in order to succeed. It also allowed me to get the ball rolling before leaving my paying job.

I guess a side benefit was that when I left my day job, it almost felt like I was on vacation, just having to work one job!

Cheers!

@Offset
Online offers a lot of flexibility, and a chance to try out business ownership on your own time before you cut the umbilical cord of the day job. There is a lot of competition on line, and profits may be smaller for some ideas, but it will still give you an idea of what running your own shop is like.

Thanks for coming by,

@Stephen
I was surprised by what I missed from my "real job". I did exactly what you say, and recreated social networks elsewhere to fill the void.
