Last week we went into great detail about some of the things you should think about when deciding to start your own business.
The last post of the series was 10 Early Signs Your Business is Heading for Danger, and How to Avoid It, which was essentially a laundry list of things I’ve done wrong over the years and how you can avoid them.
More Business Lessons Learned
In sticking with that theme a little while longer, here’s another great list of 10 business lessons learned. Some of my favorites from the presentation include:
1. Differentiate yourself – like you differentiate your product
2. Business is about cycles (and luck)
3. You can’t be a great leader unless you’ve been through a crisis
4. Some of your best learning will come from your worst boss
5. Hire people different than you, and capable in many more things
I highly recommend you check out the presentation for the other 5 business lessons learned.

A good list. People interested in this should read the books The Rules of Work and The Rules of Management from Richard Templar. Of course I’ve broken his first rule of work, I’m not supposed to tell anyone about these books.
This was great! I especially agree with the part about how your best learning comes from your worst boss, critics, results, etc. It’s painful but it’s true. Thanks!
A great leader comes after going through a great crisis. Well said.
@McLaughlin
I’ll check those out…trust me, I won’t say anything about you telling me.

@Stephen
I heard something similar with regards to leadership. The two steps to becoming a great leader:
1) think of your worst boss ever – don’t be like them
2) think of your best boss ever – be like them
Pretty easy when you put it that way
Matt
The lessons are simple yet extremely useful. I especially like #1 – Differentiate yourself and #5 – Hire people different than you. Thanks so much for sharing, Matt!
Cheers~

@Mark
I liked #5 too – surround yourself with people more capable than you are. Can’t go wrong with a strategy like that!
Glad you liked the post, thanks for coming by.
Matt
Yeah I think that many times people will hire others that are just like them. Whether its about ego or what, its just not a good idea. Why hire someone who is just like you? As for number 4, yeah I once heard that your worst enemies are your greatest teachers.

#4 is so true! I got my most valuable business lessons from my absolute worst boss! I should call her up and thank her for making me a better manager and leader through her incompetence.
@Pat
LOL…I think we learn something from everybody – Even if it’s exactly what we DON’T want to be!
Matt
