Robert,
Great post, the timing could not be better to jump start my week.
I am planning to revamp my network of about 70 real estate websites and few of your sentences really hit the spot.

Thanks for that and looking forward to more of your appearances.

btw. you should copyright this or something, it's genius .
"URLs are the 800 numbers of the 1900s. "

When I joined Microsoft we were given an email alias of less than 8 letters, part of our first and last name - like BillG for the big guy. People used these like a name, pronouncing them out - like Bill Gee.
Mine alias was richmcl and people called me Rich Mickle, pronounced like sickle or pickle. Now they use both alias and real name, so as I was leaving it was Richard.McLaughlin.
Semi-useless detail, but now I think that it is really important to have YourName at Domain dot com - or better, have your own name as a domain. All the McLaughlin domains are taken, and years ago I 'rented' and email address from the person that owned the McLaughlin.com site, so I had Richard at McLaughlin.com, which people found really easy to remember when I gave my email address - I just forwarded all that mail to my work email.
On your domain email list you have to include sales@ marketing@ support@ & info@ & webmaster@ YourDomain.com - any of the common email addresses that people may use to try and reach you. Make it as easy as possible for people to reach out to you.

Cheers

This particularly resonates with me:

"If your concept is solid, your timing is right, and your commitment to your core idea is unshakeable.... ....the message has to be crafted carefully, the resources invested wisely, and the potential and actual payoff evaluated closely."

This is so true. I am always surprised by the number of people that come up to me asking me how I get results from social media, when it is clear that all they are looking for is a simple solution to make money without putting the work you need to put in behind the scenes. And they don't want to slow down and look at the whole picture to see everything you need to get it right.

Another common roadblock I see with the small business owner, is how personal hangups about social media get in the way of the overall business objectives.

Thank you for a great article!
