Myths, legends, and lore - all part of great fiction, but could they also be shaping our ideas about business?
Told over and over again business myths will be regarded as fact, without ever knowing their true origin.
Take for example the old adage that "leadership can only come from the top". Or "there is no room for failure".
How about "my title reflects my credibility", or that "the truth is dangerous".
Myths every one of them, and quite honestly this line of thinking doesn't hold much validity in today's succesful busines environments.
But it doesn't stop them from being told over and again, and worse yet believed!

For over 40 weird (yet most still believed) business myths, check out this great presentation from Steve Green of Salesforce.com.

Matt,
Great set of myths. I think they can all be grouped into the category of how NOT to lead. Many of these fall into poor leadership practices. Good leadership training will expose these myths for the fallacies they are.

George,
I see it as having a “management” mindset…that all aspects of the business need to be managed, including people, ideas, processes, etc. When in reality business needs very little management, it more often needs leadership which can come from any level of the organization (you just hope the top brass are good leaders too!).
Matt
There is a myth from the 1990’s that stated 9 out of 10 businesses close in their first year. The US Small Business Administration still gets calls every year from people looking for the unknown source of the 9 out of 10 sound bite. The myth persists partly due to a widely held belief that business closure is always considered a negative event.
