1. Register Your Business with Google Local
Google has been offering local businesses a chance to register their business address and phone number in its local listings for some time. When the search giant started to display local listing in its search results, the service become a must service for many businesses. When a user searches for a keyword together with a location, for example 'DC plumber', the search results will include listings from Google Local displayed on a map. The service is free to register.

Adwords is definitely a way of guaranteeing some immeadiate traffic, while you’re working on improving your organic rankings. I like the idea of a rewards scheme, and am definitely going to implement it in my current project.
I can’t stress enough the importance of #3. Promoting yourself is a must-do for any entrepreneur today. And with all the great tools for do-it-yourself PR, the ability for virtually anyone to get their own 15 minutes of fame, combined with the rise of social networking, it’s critical for entrepreneurs to take advantage. We all have a story to tell, and small business is no different.

Michelle, this a great list. I have seen local businesses receive a lot of customers from some of this methods. One thing that I would keep in mind is that you always give your marketing some time to work. People will see you in many different places and will eventually come calling. Great post! I’m bookmarking it now and will refer to it often I am sure.
Useful tips. Another suggestion for google local is to use keywords within the business field name for extra exposure.
