7 Tips on Personal Branding and Motivation from Gary Vaynerchuk

Seven I ran across an older video from 2008’s Blogworld Expo featuring Gary Vaynerchuk. It was a short interview, only about 6 minutes, but in it he summed up what it takes to build your personal brand, stay motivated, and ultimately succeed.

Gary Vaynerchuk is known for his popular videos on Wine Library TV. Regardless of what you think of Gary, you can’t debate his success and he will be the first to tell you it didn’t happen overnight.

Tips on Personal Brand and Motivation

1) Content

It all starts here, with what you are producing or what service you are providing. You have to be good – Your content  has to be good.

2) Community

Building your community is what will take you to the next level. Interact with those around you, bring them in to what you are doing and go to where they are to interact.

3) Hard work for Big Goals

You need to be willing to work hard enough to achieve big goals. Putting out one video, or blog post, or one comment is not going to get you to where you want to be. As Gary puts it a lot of people are “half pregnant”. Not willing to do the big work to achieve the big things.

4) Only as Good as You

We’ve talked about this here many times. Most of the time in business people are buying you, not necessarily your product or service. If you believe in yourself you can sell anything. Customers will recognize your conviction, and that translates into trust.

5) Think Legacy

Think about your legacy. It’s not all about the money. Think about your great grandchildren watching what it is you are doing. What are they going to think of what you are doing?

6) Have Pride in What You Do

With legacy in mind -  do something you are proud of, you will believe in it and you’ll be able to monetize it. Being proud of yourself, what you are doing, and what you are leaving behind will be a key motivator in achieving your goals and becoming successful.

7) Do the Hustle

The hustle is the whole game, you have to be willing to work your A$$ off in order to win.

  1. Hi Matt, I really enjoyed this. Glad you found it. The part about working hard is what gives you the advantage. The overwhelming majority of people are not going to do it.

    @Stephen
    That’s the part that really hit home for me too. The idea that we have BIG goals, BIG dreams, BIG expectations…but somehow think we can archive those things and not go BIG. It takes a ton of work and you’re right most won’t go there.

    Good to see you,
    Matt

    Matt,

    Big stuff in small packages.

    I like these kinds of posts where the information is valuable and the blah-blah-blah is lite.

    I agree with Stephen in that most folks just won’t do the little bit it takes to do these things, allowing those of us who do to rise further, faster.

    @George
    I’m trying to keep my blah, blah, blah to a minimum these days. Good way to look at it – if I know most people won’t take the extra step, and I will, I can be confident in my ability to succeed over them.

    Cheers,
    Matt

    Matt, great content is king. You here this time and time again. Give something of value. The other point I like is being consistent, one post or video will not cut it. George also has a good point, short put gives great info. You don’t have to write a 1000 word article to give valuable information. My top 3 articles have less that 300 words each.

    I agree with all these points except that I don’t believe people can sell anything. You have to be a born salesperson and you have to believe in the product as much as yourself. Working hard and building great content and a community is crucial though and I don’t think anyone can argue with that these days.

    @Dan
    Couldn’t agree more that you have to really believe in your product and yourself in order to sell. It will come through in what you are doing if you really believe it.

    Haven’t seen you around here in a while, welcome back! Hope you’re doing well.

    Nice summary of Gary Vee!

    He is a great guy who genius cares.

    I’ve learned from him:

    -Pay attention to the techies. They know what is coming next.
    -The ability to churn out great content is key of course. The ability to not only churn it out, but do it quickly and promote it well, is the art.
    -Little touches. Replying to emails/audience even if it is short matters.

    @David
    I think it’s his ability to be personal on a large scale that has made Gary V a success. He is able to not only churn out great content, but maintain connections with a huge group of fans, followers, and customers…that’s what differentiated him – which as he says is BIG work!

    BTW – David is definitely following the Gary V model, he puts out a TON of great business information on his site…go check it out!

    Sitting recoverying from a break up this is good advice, perservere persist and position. Working on all of these outside in the work zone.

    Really enjoying the videos you put out and the writing is a surprise, it is very simple and light, as not to heavy,accessible.

    I like tip number 4 the most “Only as good as you”

    You’re right, most of the time people aren’t buying a product their buying the conditions in which the product was presented and the person who’s selling it.

    This is a great blog, one of my friends just referred me to it.
    City Sylvester´s last blog ..Personal Branding: Looking Good, Feeling Great! My ComLuv Profile

  17. Your introduction highlighted the importance of video marketing in personal branding. You got to know Gary though video, and the latter also gained webcelebrity status through his wine videos.

    So I encourage your readers to start adding video marketing in their personal branding strategies. Don’t worry about looks, people don’t expect to see actors in web videos. People expect to see you, the business owner and the hands-on real expert in action!
