Keep Your Small Business Office Green and Save
Any small business can do its part for our planet, and not only can it save the planet but also money. Here are a few thoughts on what small businesses can do along with employees to make the best of their work environments while saving money.
Go Green and Save Money
There is a difficult balance in modern business when it comes to trying to be environmentally friendly, and at the same time needing to cut down on costs. It may seem that only huge multinational organizations have the resources to build eco-friendly office buildings, but the reality though is that going green and saving money is not mutually exclusive and can be done by any business. The major tax benefits available are only one of the few cost cutting measures available to the modern business owner, and at the same time save on escalating energy costs.
A simple start to going green in your small business office space is to fit energy saving florescent light bulbs. This along with investigating and installing cooling and heating equipment that is energy efficient will save money on your energy bill every year, as well as add capital value to your premises.
As mentioned earlier, there is a tax deduction benefit that comes from being more energy efficient, and this deduction is applicable when a tenant or owner of a building can prove a 50% energy cost reduction. It is not expected that this deduction will last forever so make sure to get your business’ energy efficiency plans implemented as soon as possible.
An important point to emphasize is that energy efficiency starts with the employer or owner but the real focus should be with the employees. There are certain companies that offer cash and other incentives for being green. Often this is for employees who use public transport or that can prove a reduction in paper usage without affecting the workflow. These incentives save the company money and motivate staff to do there bit everyday while they work.
Two Tips For a Better Green Business
So, if you are small business owner who wants to have a better eco-friendly business by going green and saving money, here are some tips that can help:
Have an audit done
The best way to be more efficient is to evaluate your current situation by having an energy audit done. From here a business can have a baseline from where they can set goals and work towards improving.
Some energy companies do energy audits for free, and if the company is very small, doing a little research can show you exactly how to perform your own energy audit.
Upgrade rather than replace
The world is obsessed with new and improved, but little thought is given to what happens to old and outdated products. The entire world’s waste is caused by redundancy in some form or another, so the longer one can use something, the less waste there will be. Computers, as an example, should be upgraded for as long as possible before being replaced. It is a amazing how much better a computer will perform with a RAM boost etc. so see what can be done before a decision is made for replacing.
Also, although some computers may be outdated for certain functions there is a good possibility that they can be used for other more mundane tasks. If replacement is absolutely essential, be sure to look at the many energy saving units that are available, and these are constantly becoming more efficient, and are not considerably more than an energy intensive substitute.
Going green and saving money and our planet is something that can easily be done together, and as becoming more eco friendly will no longer be a choice in the near future; getting started will give any business a competitive edge. Start today with the small things and motivate staff to contribute to the company’s eco-friendly goals.
