Can You Attain the Goals Set for Your Small Business?

For many small business owners, the sky is the limit.

Whether it is outdoing the previous quarter or bettering goals from a year ago, many individuals who own companies sometimes set unrealistic goals for their employees to attain. When those numbers are not reached, everyone feels a letdown, especially those in charge of the business.

So, how should you as a small business owner go about setting the right goals for your employees to achieve as a team and as individuals?

Among the things you should strive for are:

  • Setting realistic goals – For too many business owners, the goals set come up short, leading to disappointment among many. One of the reasons the goals sometimes do just that is they were not clearly defined. Be sure to clearly state what your goals are and how best to go about achieving them. The goals need to be measurable so that both you and your employees can evaluate them and see where any shortcomings are;
  • Setting enforced dates for achievement – If you set dates for goals and then don’t follow through on them, what was the purpose of setting them in the first place? Break down your goals to weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly;
  • Evaluating and enhancing the company’s record–Evaluation is a necessary process in the goal-setting project. When you evaluate your company’s goals, always have in place a plan to better those goals the next month, the next quarter, the next year etc. By doing so, you are always looking forward and not back;
  • Evaluating and enhancing the worker’s record – Employee evaluations can sometimes be a little dicey, but they are essential to making sure everyone is on the same page when it comes to moving the company forward. When discussing with employees how they are doing, keep to the positive, but do not be afraid to encourage more growth and better performance. As we all know, each worker is a key piece to the success puzzle….it just takes one missing piece to throw everything off;
  • Keeping things in perspective – Lastly, remember that unforeseen circumstances can throw your goals off kilter. Given the topsy-turvy economy the last few years, many prior growth projections had to be thrown out the window, with many small businesses just going into survival mode. Evaluate how your competition is doing, where you feel your company should be, and if whether or not you have the right people in place to achieve your goals.

At the end of the day, a company’s goals help you the owner and your employees zero in on the mission of your small business.

Without them, your small business could be left out of focus.

    You should not set realistic goals, you should set goals that everyone should strive to meet 100% to avoid any excuses afterwards why they did not reach the targets. it is called full concentration and focus on the goal.

    It’s important not to let some goals overshadow others.

    For example, I might manage to install as many solar panels as we need to, but I’ll end up taking up all of the quality time available to family. Keeping a balance is tricky.

    I would encourage single people to start a business with SMART goals, and for married people to first buildup a cash chunk for emergencies + develop systems and plans (eg OHS plan) in spare time whilst working somewhere else.

  8. One more thing: Be completely honest with yourself. Don’t just settle with goal of ‘x’ if you know, deep down, you want more.
