Three cost-effective ways to market your start-up in 2012
Friends sneered at you when you said that you are going the entrepreneurial way. You quit your job in that MNC to build this dream product. Now the product is finally out in the open but how do you find takers for your product.
Needless to say, being a startup you always have this financial question mark staring blankly at your face. Keeping in mind the limitations, startups can easily use these three tools to market their product. It is working for us and if you do it right, it will work for you too.
Social Networking might be passé but networking is not :
Start by using your own personal contacts and their contacts. Ask your friends to try and use your product. Talk about your product when you meet each other during social gatherings. You somehow have to ensure that the optimism you have for your product, gets communicated around. And all said and done, Facebook and Twitter are still one of the best ways to talk about your brand online.
Data Visualizations:
A picture is worth a thousand words. People might not be interested in your 1000 words article but they would love to see a nice graphic communicating the same idea. Try exploring infographics to market what your product stands for, what problem it seeks to solve, industry trends in your market, etc.
Blogging:
This is an effective way to make yourself heard online. Post articles that you think your target market would be interested in. Try and establish yourself as the thought leader in your industry. Encourage the idea of blogging within your organization. Ask employees to contribute their own take on things.
All the best and have a rocking year!

Guest Posting To Help Grow Your Online Business
Guest posting is one of the fastest and most effective way to get a sudden increase in targeted traffic to your website when done correctly. There are two different sides to approach this from. One is from the point of getting others write guest posts on your blog or website and provide your readers high quality content that they will enjoy and the other approach is when you want to be you the one who provides content to other blogs or websites in exchange for links to your own website or blog. This is the prospective that we will be discussing here. This brings us to a very simple question.
What are the benefits of guest posting ?
The most important benefits are the following :
1.) Targeted traffic to your blog or website
2.) More opt-ins for your email list
3.) High quality back-links to your blog or website
4.) More name or brand recognition in your niche or market place.
As I said guest posting is probably the most effective marketing and traffic generation strategy that will not only help you get more targeted traffic, but it can also help you build your email list much faster than any other marketing strategy and become recognizable as an expert in your field.
The reason why guest posting can work so well is because if you do it correctly then you will be borrowing the influence, traffic and pagerank of an already established authority blog on your niche
Before you start using guest posting as a part of your marketing strategy you should first
make sure that your blog, website or offer converts. If you are just starting out and have not made any sales yet, then you may not be ready for this marketing strategy yet. The reason for this is that you have to be able to provide proven value to the readers and the blog owner that you worth to contribue on his/her blog.
Once you have proof that your blog or website is providing high value content and that your offer converts (at least some percentage of your visitors into buyers) then you are ready to look for other blog owners to work with. Your goal in working with another blog or website owner should be to give them a unique, high quality article that will provide something of value to their target audience.
This is what you will be offering them and in exchange you should be planning on receiving some of the above mentioned benefits of guest posting.
The way to go about guest posting is simple. Here are the steps that you should follow
Research
Select blogs or websites in your niche that complement what you offer without being in direct competition. For example if you are in the weight loss niche and you promote a weight loss product then you will want to target other health or fitness related websites that promote a different type of health or fitness product.
In addition you should also make sure that the blogs that you select are well established and get good steady amounts of traffic. One way of checking this is by using alexa to check a websites ranking and traffic volume.
Contact
When you decide which blogs you want to write a guest post for do not hesitate and contact the blog owner. Most blogs that accept guest posts have a page (usually the name of this page is “write for us”) with a form where you can submit your guest post and ask the blogger to review it and if he/she likes it to publish it. If there is no “write for us” page you can send an email using his contact information. Once you contact them and they are interested in using your guest post, you will then want to verify when the post will be published and how long it will remain on their site.
Promote your Guest Post
After your guest post has been published and you verify that there is no problem, you should start promoting it thru your social media networks, blog or even your email list in order to generate as much traffic to this your guest post as possible. Bloggers love to see their post being shared and will certainly apreciate your effort. Another thing you should do in order to get the most of your guest posts is to respond to any comment readers write, in that way you will get even more traffic and backlinks.
Once you have successfully implemented these steps you can repeat the process as often as needed to help you continue to grow your business and income as well.

Marketing online is not always as easy as you might imagine it to be. There are some tricks which will allow you to be more successful with online promotions than with others. It pays to know about the tricks so that you can enjoy a more successful business.
The online blog has emerged as one of the greatest informal ways to grab more attention from the public at large. Not only do they get to know about your company, but they get to connect in a more personal way. You can connect the blog to your social media sites. You can also provide outstanding content which people can enjoy and will bring them back again and again. Additionally, you can offer free tools like eBooks and more for only an email address. By marketing through these means, your blog will turn from a simple way to tell people about your business to a great marketing tool.
Connect to Social Media Sites
Social media sites are the most popular sites on the internet these days. More people spend more time on them these days rather than any other location. They meet with their friends, learn about companies and play games. Most any business has a profile on these sites. If you do not, you are considered to be out of touch with the modern age. Linking to the sites through your blog will allow people to follow your blog and other info about your company in a way that they are familiar with.
Use the Right Content
Content is one of the most important things you can put on a blog. After all, without content the blog is nothing other than an information tool. Loading the blog with SEO content and other marketing devices will help to attract attention to the blog in the first place as well as help in making sure that the blog will allow you to market correctly in the future as well. Write content which is not only effective in grabbing attention, but that is useful enough to make people want to return simply to see what else you have to offer in terms of content.
Gather Email Addresses
Gathering email addresses is extremely important to be able to contact clients later. Offer information on everything from the VoIP business phone system to marketing information. Offer the ability to get even more information through a free eBook when they sign up for a free subscription with your site. The only thing they will need to do is to provide you with their email address. Once you have the email address you can use it to commit to a direct marketing program.

Blogging for Small Business Owners & SME’s
Imagine if you could listen intently and get up to the minute information, like a fly on a wall to millions of people as they talk about your business? That’s what type of power blogging for small business owners can promote.
Now imagine if you could take that information and translate it into exactly what your customers want, how they want it and what they will ultimately buy and not to mention, what they will pay for it.
The Many Benefits Of Blogging
Blogging is a tool that businesses are using to make actual decisions on customer feedback and market intelligence. It’s the smartest move businesses are making today.
Blogs expand the ability for companies to operate and create growth. And blogs are taking this communication a step further by using mass marketing and transforming the old-boy way of one way dialogue into a two way dialogue. If you haven’t invited this type of marketing tool into your business, believe me your competitors have.
There are almost 500 million blog readers daily and it’s a continuous conversation, 24 hours a day. Part of the conversation may be about your company, good or bad but this gives you the opportunity to get leverage because you hear what your customers like or dislike; and you can make changes instantly based on that information.
Some Unique Challenges
But as good as blogging gets it has created a unique challenge; how do you keep up with the demand? You see blogs are an open door. They enter your customer’s home and office at any time and offer a transparency. If used correctly you get to use an authentic and authoritative honest voice to sustain real relationships. But can you imagine real relationships with millions of people 24 hours a day?
Many small business owners realize what blogging can do for their business but don’t have the manpower to take on this initiative. Some start out strong creating a blog but then fall short once they realize the commitment it takes.
Big businesses have learned to use outsourcing as an advantage; outsourced tasks, such as blogging gives small businesses the freedom to concentrate on other daily tasks and focus their attention on expansion.
What Exactly Makes you a Successful Blogger?
- You must listen to the conversations
- Disseminate what is being said by your customers
- Evaluate and Value the conversation
- Contribute to the conversation continuously
- Listen some more
As you become more aware of how the blogging process works and how you can benefit from it you’ll also make note to check on your competition via blogging sites. This not only gives your company a chance to sway some customers away from your competitors but it keeps you abreast of what you’re up against.
The point of blogging is to contribute some valuable information and listen to the results you get. Whether good or bad, the results will tell you what your next move is. But this is a continuous process and can become overwhelming for a small business owner. This is why businesses, whether big or small are outsourcing this marketing task.
The easier thing to do is hire specialist that gather and disseminate all the information and provide feedback to you. Outsourcing specialists for blogging can also see how blogger conversations grow and keep track of emerging trends.
Blog marketing has become a core fragment of every business. Blogging keeps your company visible, creates a stir among the marketplace and it builds trust within your customer base that you never realized before.

Conference Call Etiquette – How to Sound Professional in Your Pajamas
The following is a guest post from Amanda Mitchell a freelance writer who specializes in getting the most of technology for small businesses. You can reach Amanda at mitchell_amanda (at) ymail.com

You’ve started a small business and quit your day job. Good for you! But just because you’re working from home now doesn’t mean you won’t be interacting with others on a daily basis. If you run a service-based business, you need to communicate with your clients. While e-mail and instant messaging can be useful to convey quick messages, the time may come when you need to have a real conversation with your clients. If you’re in New York and they’re in California, meeting at the office is out of the question. This is where conference calls come in.
Be careful, though. Working from home can cause some people to get a little too comfortable. You might be sitting at a desk, working on a computer, but if your professional dress code entails flannel pajamas and fuzzy slippers, it can be very easy to forget you’re dealing with professionals who are expecting you to be professional too. A few simple tips will help you prepare for your conference calls, and keep your professional reputation intact.
Get dressed
There’s nothing wrong with working in pajamas, sweats, or even a muumuu, if that’s your thing. Part of the reason you wanted to work from home was that you knew you could be just as productive while you were comfortable as you were when you had to dress up in constrictive business attire. Maybe even more productive, right? But interacting with others via e-mail, instant message, or social media is very different from actually talking to them.
If it helps you maintain a professional demeanor during the conference call, get out of the pajamas and into some real clothes, even if it’s just jeans. It will remind you that it’s not an ordinary day where it’s just you, your computer, and your Twitter friends, and will help you stay focused.
Get the kids out of the room
A lot of people start businesses from home to spend more time with their kids, or simply to avoid paying nearly what they earn at a regular job on the daycare they’ll need while they’re at work. Setting up shop at home makes all the sense in the world, until you have to get on the phone with your clients and your kid is having a meltdown.
A crying child is not good background noise, and may cause your clients to wonder whether you’ll be able to get their project done while facing the demands of home. Your kids are important, but so is your business, and your clients deserve your full attention during a phone call. If your kids are school age, schedule the conference call during school hours. If they’re not, wait until nap time. If this doesn’t work for your client’s schedule, especially if they’re in a different time zone, ask a friend or family member to come over and keep the kids busy while you take the call.
Don’t eat
It may sound like common sense, but if you have to schedule a conference call during what would normally be your lunch time because it’s when your client is available, you may think there’s nothing wrong with having a sandwich while you talk. They can’t see you, right? No, but they can hear you, and the sound of chewing or lip smacking is not going to endear you to anyone. The last thing you want is a mouth full of tuna salad right when the client asks you to explain your project time line so they can approve your budget.
Sure, some meetings are held over meals, but this is a conference call. There are no visual cues or body language to enhance your communication, and it’s even worse if you’re the only one eating. All they have to go on is your voice, so don’t obscure it with food. This also goes for chewing gum, or hard candy. No, and no. Have a glass of water nearby, sure, but no eating. Period.
Turn off the TV
Some people need the ambient noise of the television, the radio, or their iTunes library to keep them on task. It may not distract you, but it will definitely distract whoever is on the other end of the line. They need to be able to clearly hear what you’re saying. Not to mention, hearing Oprah in the background may make them wonder whether you’re actually getting any work done.
Keep things quiet, behave professionally, and your clients don’t ever have to know you work in your pajamas.

How To Build A Good Website That Keeps Your Customers Fully Satisfied
In this guest post Lena Morrish and Dima Nikolayenko share their tips to building a website that keeps your customers satisfied, and coming back for more!
It is fairly common knowledge that there is wider acceptance of the online mode of shopping today, than ever before.
More and more customers who never considered the online mode for making routine (as well as exotic!) purchases are starting to discover the absolute convenience of being able to carry out their shopping from the comfort of their homes or offices, make payments online, and have the merchandise delivered to where they would like it to – totally hassle free!
Online Shopping Challenges
That said, all online business store owners – small or big, need to make sure that their customers remain happy with their efforts and keep coming back to them often. This is particularly true in the face of significant competition online.
=
One of the major challenges that online stores face in particular is the lack of personalization and the human touch or element, which is often extremely important to many shoppers – they like to touch and feel the products that they are looking to buy. Another agonizing experience for online shoppers is the lack of instant nirvana or gratification – they actually have to wait out for the item that they have bought to arrive through the mail.
Advantages are Numerous
Yet, online stores proffer numerous advantages which actually outweigh the disadvantages by a huge margin. Customers can get exactly what they want, however exotic the item may be, something which a lot of offline, brick-and-mortar stores are loath to stock up on. Also, they never need to leave where they are, and can order, pay and expect delivery of the item they have shopped, from the comfort of their home or office.
=
Online stores are great for the sellers as well – no major inventory to stock up on, neither any costs of sales personnel to incur. The only major costs are the marketing costs and ensuring that customers actually visit as well as buy things from the store.
Not to Burst Your Bubble, But…
But that is where the catch is – the costs, or at least the efforts for marketing and promotion are reasonably significant. This is particularly true since barriers to entry for all other prospective sellers are reasonably low, and there is immense competition.
=
Also, while you may be able to sell to the whole world, anyone in the entire world could be selling those items too, as against having a shop in a particular neighborhood, where, by and large, you are competing with shops only in the vicinity.
=
So, how to build a good website that keeps your customers fully satisfied?
Find the Right Tools
This is where website building tools really come in handy; they guide you on ensuring that your efforts are channelized in the right direction so that you end up getting maximum bang for your buck (particularly when the bucks we are referring to here are essentially metaphorical, denoting the efforts that you put in more than the money).
=
For instance, keyword research tools can save you a huge amount of time and effort by providing you with just the right keywords that users are likely to key in when searching for what you have on offer. Similarly, there are tools such as those for email marketing and promotion, affiliate marketing tools, web design and hosting tools and so on, which can together go a long way in ensuring that your efforts pay off to the maximum.
Conclusion
In conclusion, it would be wise to try out each tool one after another and see which one works best for you; you can then accordingly channelize your efforts and focus on those tools that work the best. The approach maybe is slow to begin with, but ultimately it bears maximum fruits.
=
Lena Morrish and Dima Nikolayenko, internet publishers, can show you how to start up an internet business and use appropriate tools such as website building tools, keyword research tool, follow up autoresponder etc. to make your customers happier and create their desire to keep returning to your website.

6 Tips on Getting Traffic to Your New Blog
We know a blog can be a great tool for businesses. If you’ve finally got your blog off the ground, the next step is to get some traffic to it. This guest post by Andrew Rondeau of Webuildyourblog.com offers up 6 tips to getting the traffic flowing in.
There’s a popular saying in business, that the hardest part of anything is simply showing up. While it holds true throughout many aspects of corporate culture and success, it’s certainly not true for the blogging world. If the blogosphere’s got anything, it’s millions of people who’ve shown up, some uninvited. Showing up simply isn’t enough to become a blogging success anymore.
You’ve got to generate traffic and promote yourself.
You’ve got to create timeless posts that circulate throughout social bookmarking services for years to come.
You’ve got to take an active presence in getting your blog out there.
It’s no longer about simply writing; promoting is the biggest part of blogging today.
Here are six tips for getting traffic to your new blog.
#1: Don’t just write for cash
It’s tempting to write solely for Adsense revenue, but doing so is a bit of a failed metric for success. There are ultimately two different kinds of blog content, made-for-revenue and organic. When you focus on revenue-generating content, you end up destroying your long-term financial potential. Focus on generating readers, not just cash, and start looking at monetizing your blog later on.
#2: Guest posts are great for generating traffic
There are always going to be bloggers out there with more traffic than you, regardless of what niche you write on or how often you write. There are millions of blogs around, and the spread of traffic between them all is truly stunning. Don’t think that you can get it all to yourself — cooperate and collaborate with other bloggers and expand your reach. Contact a big blogger about guest posting on their blog, and you could see some serious traffic come over to yours.
#3: Social bookmarking loves images
Got a post that could succeed on Digg or Reddit? Make sure you’ve included images in the post’s body copy. Most social bookmarking services seem to favor articles that have images and dynamic media included in the page, so ensure you’ve got something interesting for people to look at, as well as something interesting to read. Make sure you add tags to your images.
#4: Don’t sell out to promoters
Promotional posts are great, so long as they’re intelligently targeted and used sparingly. However, subscribers hate unnecessary promotional content, and using too much of it is a great way to see your readership dramatically decline. Focus on generating traffic, and leave promotional or sponsored posts out until you’ve reached a sustainable subscriber level.
#5: Experiment with different posting mediums
Video blogging is fun, and experimentation with it could generate more readers for your blog. Trying different post formats, topics, and styles is great for boosting traffic. When more people enjoy at least some aspect of your blog, more people talk about it, which means much more traffic.
#6: Use social media to compliment and sustain your blog
A Twitter account is great for promoting your top blog posts, generating buzz, and of course, increasing traffic. When you pair your blog up with social media services, you give yourself an avenue to drive traffic to your blog. A Facebook page might cost an hour of your time to set up, but it’s well worth the long-term promotional benefits.

Blog Your Way to New Customers and Repeat Business
I’m happy to have another guest post by best selling author Corey Perlman to share with you. Today Corey delves into many virtues of using your blog to attract and retain customers. Take it away Corey…
I already know something very unique about every single person who is reading this article. No, I’m not channeling David Blaine or spending too much time watching reruns of Mind Freak, I just know each and every one of you is an expert on at least one topic in his or her field.
I also know that you have a massive audience via the World Wide Web that is eager to hear what you have to say. Regardless of your profession, you have information that we need and that’s what makes it valuable.
Let’s use a dentist or dental hygienist as an example. They know how to keep our teeth healthy and pearly white. If they provided that information free of charge, wouldn’t you read it? I know I would – especially with that candy jar sitting outside of my office.
What if you were in the market for a new home and a real estate agent gave you free tips on how to negotiate when buying a new home? I bet many new home buyers would be first in line to gobble that information up. And I could go on and on with other examples.
Channel Your Expertise
The point is everyone has valuable information to share with the public and the Internet has provided a vehicle to get your message out to the masses quickly and effectively. That vehicle is called a blog (or web log or online journal for us non-techies out there) and it is a web page where you can publish content for others to read and comment on. Blogs are easy to use and you can set one up absolutely free. Isn’t the Internet great!
My blogging site of choice is www.blogger.com and I like them for two reasons. First, it’s very user friendly and perfect for the beginner blogger. And most importantly, it’s owned by a company you may have heard of called Google!
Chorus of Readers: Why do we care that it’s owned by Google?
Corey: Great question readers!
Take Advantage of Search Engines
As I touched on earlier, a blog is a Web page and a Web page can be ranked in search engines such as Google. In fact, blogs are very popular with the search engines because they like content heavy web pages and blogs are simply loaded with content.
So if you are looking to increase your overall presence on the largest search engine in the world, why not use the blogging tool that they own.
Content is Key
Chorus of Readers: I like it! But I’m still not sure what I should write about.
“If you provide value, they will come.” Ok, so Kevin Costner I am not, but the message is still the same. Give high value content in your blog posts and you will begin to gain a following. And the exciting part is people will come back again and again as they will have become addicted to your content.
Value First – Sell Second
Chorus of Readers: Ok, but where’s the new customers and repeat business come from?
I thought you’d never ask. Once you have people reading your blog and gaining value, you can softly sell your products or services without offending your audience. So my philosophy is provide value first, sell second.
My world is Internet marketing, so I might write a post in my blog about how to rank high in Google and then my next post might be an invitation to one of my workshops. And they won’t be put off by my self promotion because I sell rarely and provide value often.
Chorus of Readers: Ok, we have work to do, any final words?
Remember Two Things
I will leave you with the two most important things to remember when creating content in blogs. First, what words are people searching for on Google that you’d love to have your Blog appear at the top of the page? Use those words over and over again when writing in your blog. Search engines evaluate frequency when determining where to rank web pages on their site. Finally, always remember to Hurl Your URL! That simple means to provide a link on your blog to your main Website so people can easily go there for more information about you or your company.
Chorus of Readers: This is great! By the way, who are you?
Corey Perlman is the author of the #1 Amazon.com bestseller eBoot Camp: Proven Internet Marketing Techniques to Grow Your Business. The book provides easy-to-do strategies and techniques to help you market your business on the Web. It covers topics such as social networking sites, Web site optimization, online articles and press releases, video marketing, and much more. How One Blog Post Can Get Your Business Seen by 50,000 People in 7 Days
A couple of days ago I wrote a post on the importance of your business having a blog.
One of the main benefits I highlighted was the fact that a blog gives you a bridge to social media. Your blog posts can be talked about in various social media circles, and it gives you a point of reference when you are engaging your social media audience.
To illustrate the importance of getting your business into social circles, and having folks talk about it, I thought I would use an example from this blog about how effective that can be in getting traffic, and potential customers to your website.
The Story
On February 12 I wrote this post, which was a compilation of free business classes which could be found online.
The work involved in creating the post amounted to doing a handful of Google searches for free business classes in categories I thought would be of interest. Starting a business, entrepreneurship, marketing, leadership, etc.
Once I had links to the free classes, my “work” was basically done. I organized them by category, formatted the post so it was consistent with the blog, and published.
From there an automatic “Tweet” goes out to my Twitter followers. And I passed along the link for a few of my friends on StumbleUpon to check out.
Start to finish this took about 2 hours.
The Result
As of February 17 that one post has generated 34,615 visits to my blog, and is on target to generate nearly 50,000 visits in 7 days. The traffic I will get in one week is equal to about 2x what I would receive in a month.
I don’t share this information to brag. Really I was unaware it would hit such a chord with readers. I was just trying to provide something useful, and something that was on topic within my niche.
If Your Business Isn’t Blogging, You’re Missing Out
The reason I bring this up is to illustrate the importance of having a blog to drive traffic to your business website. If your business is blogging, you have the opportunity to get those same 50,000 visitors to your website in a week – all for 2 hours worth of work.
Wouldn’t you like to have your company or business website seen by that many people in such a short amount of time? And the possibility to repeat it is limited only by the content you create and publish to your blog.
Exploit the Numbers
As we’ve discussed before, business is a numbers game. And while many of the 50,000 visitors will only blow through the site, numbers will eventually work in your favor. Of the 34,615 visitors so far nearly 500 have subscribed to my RSS feed, or newsletter. That’s a little less than 1.5% of all visitors, but they are subscribing.
How would you like to generate 500 new leads each week for 2 hours of work? How would you like to build your mailing list, and have people opt-in to receive more information about you and your company?
Key Takeaway
This sort of traffic to your blog is possible and feasible for you and your business. Anybody who has been publishing blog posts and promoting them through social media will tell you it certainly happens, and it can happen over and over.
As you become more in tune with what strikes a vein within your social media circles your chances of recreating a flood of traffic only increase as you can write content pertinent to them.
All of it starts with a blog though, and hopefully this example illustrates the power of having one for your business and using it as a bridge to social media.
