Twitter Fest Friday – January 23, 2009
It was a pretty quiet day in the Twitterverse today, at least in my little corner of it. But I still got some very good replies to today’s Twitter Fest Friday question.
The idea for today’s question was born more out of curiosity than anything we’ve specifically talked about on Smallbizbee.com in the last week, but something that I was pondering about my own experience with Twitter and thinking how it’s changed what I do.
Friday January 23, 2009
How has Twitter changed your business?

Twitter Fest Friday – January 16, 2009
I was lamenting yesterday about how tough economic times doesn’t mean that us small business owners fold up shop, or put our head in the sand and hide. In fact my point was quite the opposite. It’s time to do more, not less, and capitalize on the opportunities still being presented to us.
The thought was still on my mind this morning when I pinged the Twitterverse to see what their take was. I’m glad to see there are others out there using this downturn as a time to get their businesses mean and lean, and looking for ways to prosper.

Twitter Fest Friday – Dec 19, 2008
Maybe it’s because I’ve been extremely busy the last few weeks, or that I’ve had some life changes that have added stress lately, but the quote “It’s always darkest before the dawn” has been in my head, right next to “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”.
This got me thinking about advice I’ve received through the years that I lean on in times of business or personal struggles, and how a really good piece of advice is timeless and more valuable to our success than any tangible item.
So today’s Twitter Fest Friday question was aimed at finding out what advice the Twitterverse thought of as the best they’ve received and what they fall back on to guide them.

Twitter Fest Friday – December 12, 2008
Today’s Twitter Fest Friday question was simple, and to the point. What’s it take to be successful?
I think the overarching theme in the answers was a “stick to it” kind of attitud. There’s many ways to say stick to it, overcome adversity, and embrace challenges and in essence that is what today’s answers convey.
Today was also one of the more fun TFF’s we’ve put together because the answers came flying in fast and furious, and the variety of it all was a joy to read!

Twitter Fest Friday – Dec 05, 2008
It seems like every time we turn around we are hit with headlines proclaiming doom, gloom, and the near failure of civilization! There is no doubt the United States has some troubles financially, and really no debating the hole we’ve gotten ourselves into with the housing market, and bailouts, but are things really that bad for you personally as big media would have us believe? I wanted to get to the bottom of it, so today’s Twitter Fest Friday question was pretty simple, and if the answers I had gotten back were “the sky is falling, duck and run!!!” then I would begin to believe the hype. However, as you’ll see in the replies, the outlook for many of us is anything but dour, and on the whole we are overwhelming optimistic about the next 12 months. Optimism doesn’t surprise me a bit, it’s what many of our businesses were built on, and will continue to be the driving factor going forward.
Friday November 14, 2008
Are you optimistic or pessimistic about the next 12 months, and why? What are your biggest challenges in the next 12 months?
glwallace Optomistic! While everyone is freaking out about the economy, there are great deals to be made. http://www.linkedin.com/in/larrywallace
ajhaveri : pessimistic. Whitney predicts banks will pull $2 trillion+ in credit card based credit out of the system…http://bizjournal.smbzen.com/

Twitter Fest Friday – Nov 14, 2008
It was apparent early on that today’s Twitter Fest Friday question really struck a nerve with the Twitterverse. The replies were fast, furious, and passionate. When it comes to pet peeves in business I’ve written here a couple times about what mine are, and I was also happy to see that I’m not the only person who has certain peeves they just cannot over look when doing business. What’s interesting is that a lot of the replies overlap, so it seems that many of us have the same pet peeves when doing business with others, so the question becomes “Why don’t businesses focus more on allieviating these irritants?”. Some might tell you they don’t have time to fix it, others may not know it is a problem, and hopefully for only a select few they just don’t care.
The takeaway for businesses here is to really look at these replies, look at how impassioned people get (using the word “hate”) when talking about things that drive them crazy! Let your competitors make the mistakes below, you certainly don’t have too. The old adage rings true that if someone has a good experience with your business they will tell 1 person, if they have a bad experience they will tell 10.

Friday November 14, 2008
What’s your biggest pet peeve when it comes to business…Or doing business with someone?
KrisColvin: My biggest pet peeve is with myself – doing business & gaining traction & agreement take time. I am too impatient.
glwallace: 1. When they show up late. 2. When they take a call during our meeting. 3. When they don’t take notes. (I could go on and on)
jantallent: my biggest pet peeve in doing business would be people who you can NOT please no matter what you do or do not do
Eric_Brantner: - My biggest pet peeve is when someone hires you for your expert services, but then they try to tell you how to do your job.
johnflynn50: Very good post. How about sales people who are clueless about the product they are selling?
debbiemahler: My Biz peeve is clients who want to reinterpret the contract to include more work they need you to do but don’t want to pay 4
BizJunkie: Can’t stand having to deal with people that are not potential buyers, but just want to talk and sound smart. What’s with that?
hblackwell: Why do businesses hire people who cannot smile (especially under pressure)? simple thing – but so overlooked
Bill Wassenaar Simple: Dealing with other businesses not run by actual business people. There is so much wasted time in the business world when trying to deal like this. Have they never read “E-Myth”?
Heather Whamond I hate automated sales calls – phone calls about actual sales. Payless Shoes is a major offender.
Kimberly White Businesses that do not return phone calls or emails after THEY have requested you contact them. http://www.accountingoutsidethebox.net
NikiSherman: It bugs me when someone assumes they know all about what you’re trying to talk to them about without listening to a word .Don’t forget the deadline to win $100 of our hard earned dollars is 11:59pm PST November 16, 2008. Where else can you get $100 for 500 words? We’re looking forward to what you have to share!

Twitter Fest Friday!
The question today was a simple yet important one, and focused on getting a sense of how businesses were using social media, or whether their business had embraced social media at all. I was not surprised to find the overwhelming response was “Yes we’ve embraced social media, and here’s how”, since that is what I would expect from users on a social media site.
A more interesting question is why aren’t some businesses leveraging social media outlets? I think a lot has to do with the adoption period one goes through when beginning to use something new, it just takes time. Also, for some businesses I’m sure there’s a learning curve, so while they know social media is important they don’t know where to start. And lastly for some businesses, sad but true, they still see social media as a “kids toy”, which means they’re completely missing out on the multitude of opportunities social media presents. As any Twitter Follower of SmallBizBee knows social media has allowed us to grow our business in ways impossible only a few short years ago.

Twitter Fest Friday
Welcome to the Halloween edition of Twitter Fest Friday! Today I asked three questions to the Twitter Followers all with a general theme of “challenge”. Since an overwhelming number of people list owning their own business as a life dream I was curious to know what holds them back, what challenges must be faced in order to achieve that dream, and how we go about assessing our weaknesses and fixing them. There was no surprise that money topped the list of challenges faced when starting a small business, and I’ll think you’ll see from the replies we all struggle with the same issues when starting out.

Twitter Fest Friday
Like most of us I’ve been thinking about our economy and how it is affecting small business, and how it affects us individually. For this week’s Twitter Fest Friday question, I thought I would see how we were feeling about the “tough times” and take the temperature of the Twitter community regarding the unique situations we are all in. It was nice to see the mood wasn’t what I would call dire, there is just a consciousness of what needs to be done to be prudent with our business and ourselves.

Questions: How has the economy affected your business, or your plans to start a business? And how has the poor economy affected your daily life?
